Lucrative New Opportunity For Small to Mid-Sized Biotechnology Companies

6 June 2010

Overview of the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Credit

The Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Credit (”the Credit”) was created by Congress as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed on March 23, 2010. The potential incentive for small to mid-sized biotechnology companies is significant but there are limited funds available and there is a short two year window to take advantage of the incentive on a first come, first serve basis.

Consequently, the time to act is now or you will miss out on this opportunity.

This article will outline the positive and negative aspects of The Credit and why you must begin the process immediately to obtain your piece of the pie.

Net Benefit Examples

Before delving into the details of the Credit, let’s look at two examples of the potential benefit for eligible companies. An important aspect of the Credit is that companies cannot take the same expenses toward the Credit and the R&D Credit. (The R&D Credit may be utilized for other expenses). These examples illustrate both the size of the incentive for the Credit but also how it compares to the R&D Tax Credit.

Benefit Comparison Example: Medical Device Maker

Sampling of Activities:

Drug Delivery Devices

Treatment Delivery Systems

Therapeutic Care Equipment

Medical Monitoring Devices

Qualified Expenditures:

2009 – $2 Million

2010 – $3 Million

Benefit Comparison:

Estimated net benefit under the R&D Tax Credit: $325,000

Estimated net benefit under The Credit: $1,625,000

Benefit Comparison Example: Biopharmaceutical Development

Sampling of Activities:

Pharmaceutical Research

Clinical Trials

Pre-Clinical Research and Testing

Qualified Expenditures:

2009: $1 Million

2010: $1.5 Million

Benefit Comparison:

Estimated net benefit under the R&D Tax Credit: $162,500

Estimated net benefit under the Affordable Care Credit: $812,500

Overview of The Credit

Biotechnology firms have a lucrative opportunity to recover newly created Federal grants and tax credits. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, eligible firms can apply for a tax credit or non-taxable cash grant in an amount equal to 50% of investments made in qualified therapeutic discovery projects. Congress mandated the creation of a new program, administered by the Secretary of the Treasury (”the Secretary”), to consider grants and credits by the end of May 2010. While the scope of activities covered by the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Credit (”the Credit”) is broad, the amount of funds and years of eligibility are limited.

Broad in Scope

The Credit goes beyond existing investment tax incentives. Under the new law, expenses incurred in pursuit of any project designed to develop a “product, process, or technology” that furthers the “delivery or administration of therapeutics” are qualified. Moreover, projects designed to treat or diagnose a disease or condition may be qualified.

Consideration will be given to those projects that show reasonable potential to result in:

1) new therapies that treat areas of unmet medical need;

2) new therapies that prevent, detect, or treat chronic or acute diseases and conditions;

3) reduction of long-term health care costs in the United States; and

4) significant advancement of the goal of curing cancer within a 30-year period.

Like other investment tax credits, national job creation and retention is an important part of the law. When considering grants and credits, the Secretary will take into account the potential to create and sustain high paying U.S. jobs, as well as the potential benefit to U.S. competitiveness in the fields of life, biological, and medical sciences.

Eligible Companies

Firms that employ medical researchers, biomedical engineers, and other personnel with a background in life sciences should consider this opportunity.

Here is a list of companies that may have eligible projects for The Credit:

• Pharmaceuticals

• Medical, Drug Delivery and Health Device Manufacturers

• Biopharmaceutical Engineering Firms

• Genetic Research Firms

• Biomedical Engineering Firms

• Life Sciences Companies

• Health Sciences Companies

• Health Diagnostics Manufacturers

• Biomedical Manufacturing

• Therapeutic Treatment Companies

• Biomaterial Firms

Tissue Engineering Companies

• Biomedical Optics Firms

• Cancer Research Companies

• Cancer Treatment Firms

• Radiology Companies

• Nanotechnology Firms

Major Benefits of The Credit

Unlike other investment tax incentives:

1. Applicants for the Credit are not required to have current taxable income.

2. Firms with no tax liability can apply for a grant in lieu of a tax credit.

3. The Credit has a statutory response time of 30 days.

a. Firms applying for the tax credit will be approved or denied by the Treasury Department within 30 days from the date of application.

b. Firms applying for a grant must be paid within 30 days from the later of the date of application or the date the qualified investment is made.

Limitations

Firms considering a grant or credit must take action now because of the following limitations:

1. Under current law, The Credit is only applicable to qualified investments made during the 2009 and 2010 tax years.

2. The amount of funds currently available is capped at $1 billion.

3. The credit is limited to firms with 250 employees or less.

These limitations will result in intense competition for the funds currently allocated.

Program Administration

Under the new law, the Secretary must establish a program to administer the Credit not later than 60 days from the date of enactment. Though the Secretary has not released new details yet, it is clear that application and approval of funds will occur relatively quickly. Though the exact details of the program have not been released, eligible firms must begin tax planning.

Summary

In our estimation, the positive aspects of the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project Credit are enormous but there is a small window of opportunity to take advantage of The Credit.

Given the administration and scrutiny of existing tax incentives, such as the R&D tax credit, those tax consultants with a background in science and engineering are particularly well suited to capture this new opportunity. Tax consultants with these qualifications are in the best position to help taxpayers properly identify qualified therapeutic investment projects. Eligible firms should contact a qualified tax advisor immediately.

Why You Must Not Take Penis Enlargement Pills Without Exercises

2 June 2010

Men who suffer with a small penis can now choose the size of their penises. With penis enlargement pills, patches, and penis extenders, there is a male enhancement method for just about any man looking to increase his size, performance and confidence.

In an effort to provide more value and benefits for their customers, many penis enlargement pill companies also include a free exercise guide with their pills. Penis enlargement exercises are special techniques designed for permanent penis growth in length and girth.

Both pills and exercises each fill a need and work together for total male enhancement. Penis pills cannot make your penis longer or thicker but do provide the herbs that increase blood flow and testosterone which aid the tissue strengthening and enlargement effects of exercises. You simply get bigger and faster gains by combining your exercise workouts with high quality penis enlargement pills.

Total Sexual Health: Penis Enlargement Pills And Exercises

A penis enlargement pill company should always provide its customers with access to an exercise manual. These exercises should be practiced for about 15 minutes daily. More about them soon, but in general, regular exercise is a must if you desire the biggest and fastest results from your penis enlargement efforts.

How penis enlargement pills work

The ingredients in most penis pills rush blood to the penile region, resulting in larger and harder erections. Your exercises will slowly stretch the penis tissue over time to allow more blood in. On a microscopic level, the exercises will make small tears in the tissue, and these small tears will then heal overnight. This ongoing process creates more length and thickness, and you can stop any time.

Even if you have a busy life, you should find no trouble fitting a few minutes of exercise into your day. You can just use the pills, but you will be missing out on the permanent increases in size and the boost in confidence and performance that only exercises and pills together can provide.

Why exercises are the foundation of any good penis enlargement program

Taking pills alone will give you better and bigger looking erections, but these effects are only temporary. You will experience harder erections when you want them and better overall pleasure, but the real long term benefits will come from your exercise routine.

Exercises like jelqing will take that added blood flow from the pills and slowly push it into new areas of the penis. Sometimes these areas have been cut off from normal blood flow. This may result from years of not doing special exercises, leading to poor circulation.

The truth is that millions of men suffer from sexual problems, while thousands of others are already improving their sexual health with the use of natural penis enlargement pills and exercises. Penis enlargement pills are not cheap, and should come with a free online exercise guide. For men wanting to seriously add some size and strength, combining a daily exercise routine with the pills is a great start.

Why Diabetics Struggle With Weight Loss

29 May 2010

One of the most perplexing problems that diabetics face is weight loss. Many doctors insist it is a simple matter of consuming less calories than are burned. And, in a perfect world that works. But most diabetics will insist that there is more to it, because when they do the same things as non-diabetics, they get no results, while their non-diabetic friends drop pound after pound. Fad diets do not work, diet products do not work, even exercise shows little or no results. The struggling diabetics are right– there is more to it than just cutting calories.

Diabetes is caused by eating a bad diet, and a good diet is a key part of regaining control. But it is the bad diet that has placed a number of conditions in place that must be understood in order to win the fat war. There are a number of interrelated circumstances that contribute to making diabetic weight loss difficult. First, let’s look at how the problem originated, then we can investigate how that information can lead to reversing the problem.

Years of bad diet, containing fats, sweets, high glycemic index foods, prepared foods and dairy products caused inflammation. A complete detailed explanation of how inflammation caused diabetes can be found in the “Diabetics Handbook” (see below). The following will be a gross oversimplification, due to space limitations, but hopefully, it will demonstrate the important aspects of the problem. Pro-inflammatory substances (pro-oxidants) are normally used by the body to fight disease and infection (via the immune system). They play many important roles in the body including digestion, and even breathing. Normally, the body uses antioxidants to control these processes. However, years of bad diet, which is characteristically very low in antioxidants, causes an immune system to lose the ability to shut down. Consequently, the immune system begins to attack healthy cells causing serious damage. In type I diabetes, the beta cells (insulin producing cells) are destroyed. In type II diabetes many cells are damaged setting up a condition known as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells cannot properly communicate when using insulin to uptake and burn glucose.

When the body digests food, particularly carbohydrates, it is converted into glucose. Glucose is distributed throughout the body in the bloodstream by the liver. The liver will normally control fat levels. When very high levels of fat are in the bloodstream, due to diet, the liver cannot process it all. It begins to fill its cells with sacs of triglycerides (converted glucose for storage) and it places the excess in the adipose tissues (belly fat).

The brain, vital organs and muscle tissue rely on glucose which provides energy to function. As these organs use glucose, the liver will place more in the bloodstream to replace it. In a perfect world, the organs and tissues would use it efficiently, and hopefully in proportion to the amount produced by food. Insulin resistance reduces the amount of glucose that is absorbed and stored by the organs and muscle tissue. Add to that, the fact that most diabetics lead a sedentary lifestyle, meaning that they get minimal amounts of exercise resulting in much less glucose being burned.

When the body is impaired by insulin resistance (type II diabetes), the cells do not use as much glucose. The body senses that glucose levels are building up in the bloodstream, so it instructs the pancreas to release more insulin. The body now has high glucose levels and high insulin levels in the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone that performs many functions, besides allowing cells to absorb glucose. Insulin will also attempt (vigorously) to remove excess glucose from the bloodstream by placing it in storage as fat. Once in storage, insulin will block the process of breaking fat down to remove it from storage. Many doctors say that the presence of high levels of insulin in the blood causes unnecessary water retention in the body, which is a factor in weight gain. This is a key aspect of beating diabetic obesity, which means that insulin regulation is very important. Insulin also acts on the brain. It promotes cravings that result in eating more and on the liver to manufacture more fat. The liver removes insulin from the bloodstream, but insulin causes fat to be deposited in the liver which, in turn, prevents the liver from removing insulin from the bloodstream. People with belly fat store too much fat in their livers (fatty liver disease – see below), which prevents the liver from removing insulin. consequently, insulin levels rise higher and higher, which can contribute to heart attacks and more abdominal obesity.

Also, fat in the abdominal area functions differently than fat elsewhere in the body, such as the hips. Blood flow from the belly fat goes directly to the liver. The blood flow from other fatty areas, such as the hips, goes into the body’s general circulation. Belly fat has an efficient blood supply and has as more receptors for cortisol (a stress hormone). Cortisol levels vary throughout the day, but will elevate and remain elevated if the body is under stress. High stress and high cortisol levels promote fat deposits in the belly area. It goes to the belly area because there are more cortisol receptors there. Chronically high cortisol levels kill neurons in the brain. They also interfere with neurotransmitters (such as dopamine and serotonin – the good mood neurotransmitters) which leads to depression and feeling more stressed. Depression is common in diabetics, which adds to the problem since depression causes a stress type reaction in the body. In other words, depression promotes the development of belly fat.

The fat that is stored in the adipose tissue (belly fat) is also a characteristic of diabetes. That means that diabetics are genetically prone to belly fat. Belly fat (central obesity) is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease, and several types of cancer as well. Heredity plays a role in overall body type (apple vs. a pear shape). Genetics accounts for 25-55 % of the tendency to develop the most serious diseases associated with abdominal fat, the remainder is lifestyle. As belly fat builds up, it does several things. First, it stops the production of the hormone leptin, which normally would curb appetite. Second, it causes insulin resistance to further increase, which has obvious consequences. The cells use less glucose, the body produces more insulin, and guess what… more fat goes into storage. Fat storage is the body’s way of following ancient mechanisms designed to protect the body during lean times. Cave men would sometimes go long periods of time between successful hunting campaigns. So the body learned to take advantage of good times to prepare for the bad times. The body converts glucose into glycogen and triglycerides which are very efficient methods of storing energy.

When the cells of the liver fill up with triglyceride fat sacs, the liver’s function is impaired. It cannot process fats efficiently. It quickly runs out of room to store more fat, and when the body’s tissues and organs are not using as much, the liver simply puts it all into storage as belly fat. The number of fat cells a person has is determined at birth. The numbers remain constant unless the fat cells become full. When they become full, the cells will divide creating new fat cells. The new cells will remain throughout the balance of the person’s life. However, a successful diet will reduce the size of the fat cells. Fat cells are fed by blood vessels in the belly area. Each fat cell is in contact with at least one capillary. The blood supply provides support for the metabolism. The blood flow will depend upon body weight and the overall nutritional state. The number of vessels will increase during fasting or high demand for glucose. Increased numbers of blood vessels can contribute to increasing blood pressure. The heart simply has to work harder to supply the additional vessels.

A liver that has many cells filled with triglyceride sacs is called a fatty liver NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease). Any diabetic that has large amounts of belly fat likely has a fatty liver. Fatty liver develops early in the process because of high levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream. Diabetic fatty liver’s second stage is called NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis), meaning that it is not caused by alcohol consumption (but similar), and it mimics damage caused by hepatitis diseases. Oxidation of cells begins to occur causing cell damage. The third stage is cirrhosis which is very serious and dangerous. The first stage of fatty liver is not particularly dangerous, and will go away with proper treatment. Fatty liver is difficult to diagnose. The only reliable test is to conduct a biopsy to determine how much fat is present and if any scarring is present. Biopsies are rarely conducted, because the medical industry cannot agree on how it should be interpreted. The symptoms of NAFLD are nondescript, non-existent or mimic symptoms of other diseases. Certain blood tests will display the presence of certain liver enzymes that are common in hepatitis, which would signify the presence of NASH. Fatty liver will seriously complicate the weight loss process.

Parasites will virtually stall weight loss efforts. Parasites are more common in diabetics than a non-diabetic person, due to their weakened state. Unfortunately, western medicine doctors have little training in recognizing the presence of parasites. Few people are trained in testing for them. Most common tests have a very low accuracy rate. Treating parasites with drugs is rarely effective because they have a very narrow range of effectiveness. There are over 100 common species found in humans and treatments are very specific to specie. Parasites escape diagnosis in as many as 70 chronic diseases, and are now believed to be instrumental in the development of many chronic diseases.

When parasites are present, patients will have virtually no success in losing weight. Reduced portion sizes, carbohydrate counting or elimination, or even vigorous exercise will not produce results. Parasites inflame the lining of the digestive tract, and slow nutrient absorption. They eventually spread to all areas of the body, including vital organs. They disrupt hormonal balance, blood sugar regulation and alter the metabolism. Parasites eat the nutrients ingested, or they eat the host. They leave the host with empty calories, which triggers cravings and over consumption of food (urges to pile it high on a plate). They virtually take over control of the body.

Parasites release toxins that overload the kidneys and liver. The weakened state leads to further reductions in metabolism. They hinder the maintenance of beneficial flora in the intestinal tract that can lead to over production of yeasts. Overdevelopment of yeasts lead to the development of allergies, gas and bloating. Their acids damage organs, breakdown muscle tissue and cause the central nervous system to become sluggish. The body will react to increased acid levels by producing fat cells to store the acid, thus removing it from the system. A lower metabolism encourages the production of fat cells.

The good news is, by now, the reasons for difficulty in losing weight are clearer. So how does one beat these powerful mechanisms? Start by getting rid of any parasites. The safe bet is to assume that they are present, because they probably are present. There is an extensive listing of symptoms, and how to cleanse the body of parasites in the “Diabetics Handbook”. Also read about glycemic index and load. Modify the diet to eat only low glycemic index foods. Stop eating any of the pro-oxidant foods, especially processed foods, which is basically anything in a box or can that has ingredients that you cannot pronounce, or it’s unknown as to why it is in there.

Then assume that you have a fatty liver, because you probably do to some extent. This is the tough part. The most success comes from combining a series of techniques. Fasting and exercise are effective to break the cycles and burn liver fat. But it must be done correctly. If liver and/or kidney damage is present a doctor should be consulted. An alternative to fasting is to start eating 6-8 very light, low glycemic index meals per day, instead of three large meals. That will reduce the glucose spikes that exacerbate the process.

Change the diet. Stop eating the pro-oxidant foods. Processed foods are poison to diabetics, which cannot be stressed enough! Processed flour is very bad for diabetics (actually for everybody). Sodas are high in pro-oxidants and phosphoric acid, drink green tea instead. However, be careful, some bottled green teas have additives in them, including phosphoric acid. Stop drinking coffee. Eat only very lean cuts of meat. Stop eating sweets, sugar substitutes and dairy products. Never cook food at high temperatures (over 400 degrees F) or microwave food. That means that grilling and broiling are out. Microwaves kill as much as 97% of the living nutrients in food. Steaming, stir frying in olive oil or boiling food is best. Diabetics should eat fruit if their system does not react to them (glucose spikes). Pineapple and bananas are very high in natural sugar. Eat low glycemic index foods only. Take a good quality multivitamin daily, such as Rejuvenage 40+, which is sold on the internet. If a multivitamin is being taken, compare the product label to the sample label posted on the internet. This particular multivitamin has the broadest coverage of nutrients found on the market. Eat lots of fiber, especially water-soluble fiber.

Glucose management can be improved if sodium levels are managed, and fiber levels are kept high. Sodium slows the insulin response, which means higher sodium levels can be an advantage for hypoglycemia. High sodium levels prevent a quick rise and fall in insulin levels, and subsequently reduce the blood sugar highs and lows commonly experienced with hypoglycemia. Sodium, along with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and biotin are among the most important factors in reducing erratic glucose level changes; even between meals. Manganese, chromium and niacin/niacinamide control glucose response as well as the liver’s storage of glycogen. Potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C can both, help stabilize, or interfere with glucose management depending on whether a patient is prone to be hypoglycemic, or hyperglycemic. Lower amounts are recommended for patients that are prone to hypoglycemia, and higher amounts for patients that are prone to hyperglycemia. On the other hand, high amounts of potassium can reduce manganese and chromium. High amounts of vitamin C can lower manganese and stimulate insulin. Vitamin B6 stimulates magnesium and potassium, but lowers manganese. It can become complex. It should be noted that too much sodium in the diet is never a good thing.

Eliminate candies, honey, sodas of all types, donuts, cereals (especially sweetened), cakes and bakery goods, over ripe fruits, fruit juices (unless diluted), sugar (both brown and white), syrups (corn, maple and molasses), glucose, sucrose, fructose (of any variety), dextrose, maltose, or any substance ending in “ose”. Eliminate all artificial sweeteners except Stevia. Most of the bakery goods contain synthetic additives, along with processed flour, both of which are highly pro-oxidative.

It will be necessary to start exercising to maximize the burning of glucose in tissues. Power walking for approximately 45 minutes, preferably daily, will burn upwards of 300 calories each day. Exercising other major muscle groups is important. The fasting and exercise program should be alternated with non-fast and exercise programs (3-5 days each). Depending upon health conditions, choose between a water or a juice fast. The water fast is more aggressive. Don’t lose weight too fast. It can damage the liver. Most people lose 3-5 pounds after the first several days and an additional 3-5 pounds the next day, it will level off at a pound per day after the initial loss. It is customary to not lose weight during the non-fast phase. Then repeat the cycle. The “Diabetics Handbook” covers a variety of programs, the most aggressive being a 30 day fast, which will totally detox the entire body as well. It is known to release toxins present since birth. Fasting is safe, and very effective. Exercising a muscle does not get rid of fat over the specific muscles that are exercised. The only way to reduce a fat belly is to lose weight overall, and any type of exercise will help accomplish that. There’s a growing body of research showing that the fastest way to burn off belly fat is by a combination of weight training, aerobic exercise and modified diet. Bear in mind that increased muscle mass, from exercise, will increase body weight as fat is lost.

Physical activity is clearly beneficial for diabetics, including lowering blood glucose levels. However, physical activity can make levels go too low, causing hypoglycemia for up to 24 hours afterward. For those taking insulin, or one of the oral medications that increase insulin production, the breaking of routine (fasting) by having a snack, may be required if the glucose level goes below 100 mg/dL. Adjusting medication doses before physical activity can help avoid hypoglycemia. For some diabetics, it may be necessary to consult a doctor while on aggressive programs. A snack can prevent hypoglycemia, provided that it is a low glycemic index food. Extra blood glucose checks, especially 2 hours after strenuous exercise, may be advised. Place increased emphasis on maintaining blood sugar levels. Hold them as close to normal as possible. In type II diabetes that will reduce the amount of excess insulin in the bloodstream. If insulin-dependent, or type I diabetic, avoid taking more insulin than is required to maintain control. Many diabetics assume that more insulin than is needed is not necessarily a bad thing. This is a critical phase that requires lots of testing and focus. The combination of lower insulin, lower glucose levels and vigorous exercise will allow the body to quickly start burning the liver fat. It takes up to 12-16 hours for the body to start drawing fat from the liver. Exercise will increase the metabolism. However, understanding the metabolism will be helpful, because the metabolic rate will change throughout the process. Exercise reduces stress levels. If high stress is an issue, try stress reducing activities such as deep breathing or meditation. Be certain to take antioxidant supplements during the fasting process. Several recent studies show that omega-3 fats can reduce output of another stress hormone, epinephrine (aka adrenaline). Start taking 4000IU of fish oil twice daily. You cannot overdose on fish oil. The body will produce large amounts of free radicals, which will require large amounts of antioxidants to be controlled. Be certain that 100% of the daily requirements of vitamins and minerals is consumed.

In summary, modify the diet; learn what to eat and what not to eat; take a good quality multivitamin every day; get the glucose levels in tight control; manage the insulin levels; manage the sodium levels; exercise vigorously daily; manage stress; eliminate the possibility of parasite infestation; and consider fasting techniques. Learn as much as possible about diabetes, food, and how to cleanse and maintain all of the vital organs.

If this appears to be a lot of hard work, it is. But it is not unusual for diabetics, that have not had any dieting success at all, to lose 30 pounds the first month. The key to total diabetes control, and improved health, is to lose the belly fat. It is paramount. As the belly fat goes away, it will become increasingly easier to win the fat war. Blood sugar control will become easier, blood pressure, triglyceride and cholesterol levels will improve. Stem Cell Breakthrough

27 May 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

We’ve all known about the potential that is offered by the use of stem cells when it comes to treating illness and disease due to their unique ability to transform into almost any type of human cell. The science has faced much controversy, however, due to the fact that stem cells are most often obtained through harvesting them from abortions. That has been the major roadblock in stem cell research – as of the writing of this article, President Bush has performed his first veto in order to halt stem cell research. New findings may soon negate the need for stem cells from abortions – scientists have recently used stem cells from the fat tissues of adults!

This exciting breakthrough was discovered by the David Geffen School of Medicine, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, and the University of California Los Angeles. The researchers took stem cells from fat tissue found in adults, and transformed them into smooth muscle cells! Smooth muscle cells are needed throughout the body in areas such as the intestinal tract and blood vessels. The very act of turning the stem cells into smooth muscle cells gives doctors hope that soon, we’ll be able to take those cells and use them to help repair and regenerate organs that may be damaged in the body. The cells that were transformed by the researchers behaved exactly as normal smooth muscle cells would.

In addition, the fact that the stem cells came from the body that they would be eventually used to repair, the patients would undergo little risk of rejection of the cells. In the past, doctors have been able to successfully create smooth muscle cells from cells found in the brain and the bone marrow, but this breakthrough allows for unnecessary cells to perform the task as opposed to the important ones. To ensure that the experiment wasn’t some type of isolated incident, the scientists repeated the process with the same success. The doctors now look forward to finding ways to make the transition between the fat cell and the smooth muscle cell occur more rapidly to allow for quicker production of the muscle cells. Any way you cut it, this development holds much promise for the future of the human condition.

Unraveling the Mysteries of SWH – Strange Women Habits!

25 May 2010

At the time of this writing I have been on this earth about 46 years. I’m probably not more qualified than any other 46-year-old male to speak on the topic of SWH (Strange Women Habits) with the exception of maybe being one male who has a bad habit of asking questions. I say bad, because when it comes to questioning why women do some of the goofy things they do it usually results in one of them giving me that “Oh my God, what a stupid thing to ask!” look. Unfortunately that one is usually my wife. So, in some respects I am eternally an idiot in her eyes for wondering about such silly things.

But you know what, guys? It’s time to ask! I mean, for much too long now we’ve all just accepted that women are the way they are – without questioning why. We haven’t cared about logic. We have not given any thought to the justification behind it. We have always been much too accepting of women’s strange habits – just because. It’s like asking, why is the sky blue? Who cares, it is.

I’m reminded of what inspired this little article in the first place. As I sat in my doctor’s office, awaiting yet another check-up that men only discuss amongst other men well into happy hour, my attention was distracted by a woman nearby, in her early 20’s, nicely dressed in professional attire. As she chit-chatted on a cell phone she apparently found the need to retrieve an item from her purse, and began the search. She grunted a bit in frustration as she searched and the sound of all the stuff in there reminded me of what it sounds like when I’m digging around in my tool box. She finally started pulling things out one at a time. A lipstick, compact, mirror, another lipstick, makeup, a wallet, brush, comb, some thing with a string on it, another cell phone, nylons…it was like watching Mary Poppins digging through her overnight bag. What, no pairs of shoes in there??

By the time this woman was done there was enough stuff on the chair next to her to have a small garage sale. Then I heard her mutter, “Ugh, it must be in my other purse!” So just what is the point with carrying all that stuff? Men are so much more practical. We have pockets. We love our pockets. We put what will comfortably fit in them, and not anything we won’t need for the day. If we need to carry a few more things than normal we wear cargo pants. We just like pockets. But in our pockets you will not find cologne, no hair stuff, no address books, no toothpaste, and no curling irons. You know why? Because we know there’s a good chance one of you broads are going to fall into a river with all that stuff you’re hauling around and we’re going to have to jump in and save you! And you better hope we don’t have to stop to unload our pockets first because if we do you gals are going to sink. See? You need us. You think another woman is going to jump in and save you? Not a chance. One less female means less competition!

While I’m on the purse mystery let’s tackle a related one: “Honey, hold my purse!” Please pay attention to the befuddled look on our faces! We really don’t want to hold your purse for you. There are many reasons for this: fatigue from following you around all day, our hands are busy in our pockets, public humiliation. But mostly we just want to hold onto whatever masculinity we have left that you have yet to strip away. For a little longer anyway. We know it’s inevitible. With time we will be reduced to gumby-man.

Tip for men: If you’d like to be excused from purse-holding operations try this: dig through her purse and pull out her travel-pak of tampons – hold them up high while yelling across the sales floor, “Haven’t you reached menopause yet?!”

When trying to unravel the mysteries of the strange things women do one cannot possibly overlook ODP. Contrary to what may be swirling around in your head, ODP is not an acronym for some new disorder. Then again, maybe it is. ODP is the delicate term for referring to an Open Door Pee’r. You know, someone who insists on performing restroom operatives with the door open, or insisting that their man does. ODP Syndrome is usually found amongst the female gender, in the 18 – 95 year range, and is known to stretch beyond english speaking regions. The only geographical location known to not be affected by ODP Syndrome is the African jungles. The poor native guys just don’t have a door to close.

Women, what is it about this most private moment of the day that you feel the need to be a part of? A man can be quite relaxed in there, perhaps cracking open the newspaper for the first time that day, and – knock knock knock! “What are you doing in there?” Good grief, what do you think we’re doing in there??

“Open the door!” She wants you to open the door because of the sudden need to talk about things. Nothing in particular, just things. Perhaps about your behavior while holding her purse at the mall. You may plead for just a few more minutes but you might as well be talking to the roll of tissue, she’s already picked the lock and pulled up a chair. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to run. Oh the humanity. All self-dignity is flushed. On the other side of the coin – why is it you women insist on leaving the door open when nature calls you? Then of course, to add to the botherment, is there really a need to call us in to engage in some conversation? Whatever you read in Cosmo that led you to believe men want to partake in these events was written by a woman, also stricken with ODP. We really don’t. We would rather just go through life believing our lovely female counterpart does not ever need to do such things.

There is no place like a woman’s home where you will discover the most bizarre habitual female practices. Women, for the most part, are arguably the tidier of the two genders. There are some exceptions of course, or so I hear. As it is I seem to only attract women that are borderline germaphobics, which is a bit of a mystery since I’m sure that I leave germs wherever I go. What can I say: guys are germy. But there is one common trait I’ve noticed amongst most all women, and that is the mystery of the vacuum.

Let me explain.

A woman will work hard all day cleaning house – sweating it out, almost to the point of smelling like – well, a man. She will scrub the toilets, mop the floor, clean the mirrors, dust, and finally – vacuum. And she will vacuum every square inch of the house. Then….as she looks around with a tired, yet approving smile…she will finally concede that she is finished.

And leave the vacuum in the middle of the room, plugged in!

She’ll retreat to take a shower, change clothes, relax and watch TV, stepping over the plugged in vacuum for the next 3 days! Why in the world would you females put so much effort into cleaning up the house – only to leave the vacuum out? It’s kind of like brushing your teeth and then immediately chowing down on oreos! What’s the point?

Well, after much thought and consideration I think I know. This is actually a very clever tactic devised by women everywhere to kill their husbands. You know very well that at some point between midnight and 5am we will get up to enjoy our bathroom operations without conversation, and we will trip over the dang vacuum on the way and die. Thus taking advantage of our short-term memory.

When you think about it this isn’t a very intelligent thing to do. If knock us off, who will hold your purse for you?

Since we are taking a close look at a woman’s life at home, let’s poke around in her closet. While there have been a few exceptions, most every woman I have ever met or known only has two feet. They are quite visible, usually at the end of her legs. We would probably all agree that I am correct on this. So it baffles me as to why any woman would find the need to own hundreds of pairs of shoes! Guys, next time you are hiding in the closet, take a close look at the inventory of feet coverings your woman has collected over the years. Most notably, her black mid-heel shoe things. I say that because they aren’t quite high-heels, and they aren’t tennis shoes. They are kind of in between, and it seems women own millions of them. And all of them black! I could see if they were different shades of black – you know, maybe black, blacker, and blackest – perhaps that could justify owning a dozen of each. But, if you were to line them all up the only thing a man could differentiate between them is the left one from the right. Maybe.

Special events seem to be the trigger for new shoe purchases. Company holiday parties, weddings, “Buy a right shoe and get a left one for free!” shoe sales. I can’t imagine there is a woman in the world who can say “I need a new pair of shoes!” without feeling some level of guilt.

Men are so different when it comes to shoes. We own a pair of casual ‘tennis’ shows – which we wear until our toes are poking through. Only then do we get some new ones. We go to one store to shop because we’ve already calculated how much it will cost to hobnob around town all day looking for something for a dollar less.

And for the record – no, we do not feel the least bit weird about digging through the trash to find our beloved pair of Adidas that you felt so inclined to throw out. I don’t care if they are so old and soiled that spores are growing out of them…don’t touch our shoes! For dressing up – only one shade of black is enough, and perhaps maybe 2 pairs. One pair of which we will never wear because you picked them out and they hurt our feet and make us walk like pixies.

Clearly, just as men and women are different psychologically when it comes to shoes and bathroom operations, we are agreeably different physiologically. Why do we not lift the toilet seat first? Simple. We know you’ll forget to put it down and since your bottoms are usually smaller than ours you will fall in. We are being thoughtful!

Why do we make our sandwiches right on the counter, and not on a napkin? We’re saving trees!

But contrary to what most women seem to think, men really are sympathetic to your monthly dilemma. We know you didn’t vote on it, or ask for it, and most certainly can’t take it back for a refund. For the most part – ending up with a menstrual cycle was somewhat beyond your control. You have our empathy, and we understand.

What we do not understand is your inherit need to include us in it. Isn’t it enough that we have to accept PMS as an excuse for every diabolical act of emotional castration you pull on us? I can tell you this: no matter how accommodating your man might be at your request to run to the store to buy you tampons – inside he is wanting to bypass the grocery store and keep on driving north! All the way to the store he is pounding the steering wheel, shaking his fist at other drivers with a psycho look in his eyes, and swearing out the window at little old ladies with Yorkies. What is up with this? You women know that time of the month is coming around. It’s inevitable. Not a maybe, not a matter of the curse passing you by this month. The Red Badge of Courage is going to knock on your door every month! But yet you women somehow manage to forget this and every other month are suddenly without your equipment. Please! Do you really think we believe this is an accident? We know the truth! This is one more tactic to emasculate us as we suffer the indignity of having to go out into public to acquire some girly hardware for you. I learned about this early in life. My innocence being taken advantage of, I was sent off to retrieve those things. However, as I walked into the store I noticed on the note she had written instructions to pick up some left-handed tampons. Left-handed? What, is the grip different? Whatever, I figured it was new technology. But after 20 minutes of looking at every package on the Aisle of Humiliation I got so flustered I broke down and, red-faced, asked a female store employee if she knew where those new left handed models were. I showed her the note and everything. Thirty minutes later, after looking for the aisle of nothing but left handed items – I realized I had been bamboozled. I should have known. My mom isn’t even left handed.

Tip for men: Men, if you want to be permanently banned from having to purchase female stuff for the rest of your life, bring her home a box of Depends instead. Insist they do the same thing and they were on the half-price table with old bakery items.

Follow a woman out into public and you will see a whole array of fascinating behaviors. Especially if you get two or more of them together. Young guys – take heed: if you want to get an idea of what you are considering settling down with, take her out to dinner with some of her friends. Do so with caution and watch the beast within her emerge!

You can see the most blatant differences between men and women by how they talk about so-and-so across the room. You see, guys could really care less about what another guy is wearing. We really don’t. Even if they are wearing the same tennis shoes as us, it’s not an issue. Women on the other hand.. “Oh my god, will you look at that dress! What a slut! She’s probably slept with every guy in here and her mother has too!”

“Ya, look at that hairstyle! Good god, I wouldn’t be caught dead with that much mascara on…”

“Probably covering up plastic surgery mishaps!”

“And her boobs are lopsided too!”

All this character analysis from across a darkened room, inspired by one too many margaritas. Then the twist of events – when the woman comes closer to visit the ladies room and they realize it’s their long lost friend from school.. “Hellllllloooooo!!! ” Hugs and kisses. “You look so wonderful still after all these years!” “Oh I love how you did your hair! I must know where I can get a dress like that!” And on and on and on.

Then there is the diet issue, which can best be analyzed while you are still at the restaurant with her. Every woman in the world is permanently on a diet. She could be skinny enough to paint silver and be used as a flagpole – she will insist she needs to lose 10 lbs. You younger men may as well just accept this as one of those mysteries you will never ever get. However, there are some guidelines to this taboo subject that are extremely important to your mental health. First, unless you wish to be permanently banned to the sofa – do not ever agree with her! I don’t care if she’s bigger than you! If you ever allude to the notion that she may just need to lose a couple of pounds, you will be shopping for tampons for not only her, but for her friends as well!

What is interesting about women on diets is that for the most part they only seem to be officially on a diet when you take them out to a restaurant. To take it a step further, their diet restrictions only seem to apply to their order. As you eagerly tell the server of your wish for the porterhouse steak, baked potato and all the cholesterol enriched goodies that go along with it…your woman, in the most disciplined tone she can muster, will say “I’ll just have the house salad with dressing on the side.” They always say ‘I’ll just have….” because ‘just’ is the declaration that she is disciplined and you are a pig.

This is where the dynamics of women on diets, and their men (who, incidentally, are inconsiderate enough to eat anything but salad in front of them) come in to play. You see, when the food is set on the table and the aroma of grilled porterhouse with garlic-marinated mushrooms overwhelms the fresh scent of her scant serving of plant leaves – the diet restrictions seem to go to the powder room.

She, of course, just happens to have a steak knife in her purse, which is quickly retrieved, as she only wishes for a small sample. After all, she has been perfect on her diet that hour, and she deserves at least a little. You can try guarding your much deserved, thick juicy steak – rationalizing that she had the opportunity to order one but chose that plate of weeds instead. But you will end up with stab wounds all up and down your arm. So give it up. Next time just order a larger steak – womp off a small piece and toss it to her – all while mentioning in a loving tone how she really doesn’t need to diet.

The other issue with women on diets always leads to you females asking for our opinion on how you look. You see, men usually learn by the age of about – ohhh 5 – that while women may ask for our opinions about something, they do not want our honest opinion. Men, think back on when you were first confronted by a girl about whether you thought she was cute or not. Remember how you scrunched up your nose and went ‘ohh yuck!’ and if you recall she hissed spittle all over your face, stomped on both your feet, and threatened your lips with violence..? Yes, how stupid of you not to know you were supposed to lie about her unsurpassed beauty, irresistible charm, and not to mention her lack of a need to diet. The emasculating tactics start young. Little broads in training, they are.

You women out there – I think it’s sufficient to say that we men would almost rather go shopping for tampon bargains than you ask for our opinion. Think about it. Regardless of how we answer something we are screwed. Consider this scenario:

“Honey, do you think I need to lose a few pounds?” We rarely get eye contact when asked this, because she is turning in front of the mirror to inspect the real estate.

“Baby, you look so hot you could afford to put on a few pounds!” We say, puffing up our chest.

The twirling stops, her hands on hips, eyes rolling like a drunkard. “You are such a lousy liar! Why don’t you just say I’m a fat pig! Why do I even ask you anything??”

‘I don’t know,’ you mumble.

On the other hand:

“Honey, do you think I’m overweight?” She gives the pouty look.

You look her over and nod. “Yup!”

Tears, mass hysteria. “You don’t love me!!” You see, inevitably women really want their men to be good liars. But then of course when they find out we were really the ones who ate all the oreos, and not Snappy the Chihuahua – we are never-to-be-trusted-again lying beasts. You see the logic?

In summary: We can’t win. About the only thing we do right is tampon shopping.
